The Toccata in C major, Op. 7 by Robert Schumann, was completed in 1836.[1] The piece is in sonata-allegro form.[2]
The piece is exceptionally difficult, and Schumann believed it was the "hardest piece ever written".[1] A series of chords introduce the main theme, which is believed the passage that Schumann injured his hands trying to master.[2] The development features rapid unison octaves.
A typical performance of this piece lasts about six minutes.[2]
